The prostate (prostate gland) is the hormone-regulated male adnexal sex gland. This gland influences sex drive and orgasm, helps maintain spermatogenesis and sperm motility, and promotes ejaculation. The epithelial cells of the prostate secrete a secretion that accounts for about 30 per cent of sperm. It is an alkaline, greyish-white liquid containing proteins and lipids. This fluid helps the sperm to move and protects them from the acidic vaginal environment.

The prostate lies just below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, which carries urine from the bladder to the penis. In young men, the prostate is about the size of a walnut and weighs about 20 grams. Many organs shrink slightly over the years, but the opposite happens with the prostate: after a man reaches the age of about 40, it starts to grow slowly and over time, due to its anatomical position, can cause some discomfort, especially when urinating.

To maintain normal prostate function for as long as possible, people have been using certain herbs for as long as possible, the best known of which are serenoia and stinging nettle.

Serenoa repens/Sabal serrulata is a small fan-leaved palm belonging to the areca family, which grows in the USA (Gulf of Mexico coast, Florida), southern Europe and North Africa. The ripe fruit of these palms is rich in bioactive substances: as many as 17 fatty acids, phytosterols (β-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol), flavonoids (rutin, kaempferol, quercetin), tannins, amines, polysaccharides, β-carotene, minerals.

This unpleasant-tasting fruit is believed to be good for the prostate and reproductive function. The use of fresh and dried fruits or juices of the serenade by Native Americans has been a long-standing practice, having been described in the literature in the 19th century, but it was in the 20th century that the most popular use of products containing the fruits of the serenade became known, and it has been used extensively in the Americas and in Europe since then. There are now a number of clinical trials suggesting that extracts of the serenadea help to maintain normal prostate, urinary and reproductive functions.

Urtica dioica (Urtica dioica) is an herbaceous plant of the nettle family, common in many parts of the world and familiar to everyone. Despite the fact that their stem and leaves are covered with painfully irritating hairs, nettles have been considered to be very useful plants since ancient times. People used to make clothes out of nettle fibre cloth, and the leaves were and still are used for food, especially in early spring when the body is tired after the winter.

Nettle tea has always been considered a good aid for maintaining the vitality of the body and the function of the male prostate. It has now been found that nettle leaves contain phytosterols (β-sitosterol, hydroxysitosterol, stigmasterol), flavonoids (rutin, kaempferol, quercetin), polysaccharides, tannins, amines (histamine), acids, minerals, vitamins and other biologically active substances. Recent clinical trials have confirmed that nettle extracts help to maintain normal prostate function.

Selenium is a well-known trace element. It is found in both plant and animal foods. Where selenium is low in the soil, selenium is also low in the plants, so both plant and animal foods may be deficient. Those who have a poor diet, poor nutrition, or who smoke are more likely to be selenium deficient.

Selenium helps maintain normal spermatogenesis. The selenoprotein in the mitochondrial capsules of sperm is responsible for maintaining motility and the structural integrity of the sperm tail. Low levels of selenium in both humans and other mammals reduce sperm motility and increase sperm rupture.

Selenium is also an indirect component of the antioxidant network consisting of low molecular weight antioxidants and enzymes, including selenoenzymes. Therefore, selenium intake helps to protect cells against oxidative damage.
